Houdini Learning Paths Tutorials and Training
This series of tutorials breaks down a very advanced VFX shot of an animated 3D sci-fi environment. You'll take a high level, professional look at the pipeline as you start with the conceptual phase by modeling and building UVs. Then you'll continue to work your way through a typical VFX production pipeline from texturing, rigging, animating, and rendering all the way through to compositing the final scene.

Q: How is the 'Daydreamer' Production Pipeline different than other learning paths? A. Unlike other learning paths that focus on teaching you a piece of software or a specific aspect of software, the 'Daydreamer' Production Pipeline learning path focuses on teaching you how multiple software packages can be used together in a production environment to bring together a VFX shot.
Q. Are there any tutorials that I should watch before starting this learning path? A. We recommend this learning path for artists who are already familiar with the software that is used throughout this learning path. If you aren't already familiar with the software used in this learning path, we have a variety of other learning paths for other software to get you up to speed. Check out the Learning Paths page to see the learning paths for your favorite software.
Q: Do I have to follow along with the tutorial? Can I work on my own project? A. The ultimate goal is to be able to transfer the techniques and tools you've learned in this learning path to your own projects. While everyone learns at a difference pace, we recommend a three-step process before trying to apply the techniques to your own projects. The first step is to watch each tutorial and take notes along the way. Secondly, watch the tutorial and follow along trying to replicate each step in the tutorial. Lastly replicate the project from the tutorial on your own trying not to watch the tutorials as much as possible. This helps to ensure that you not only are able to replicate what was taught in the tutorial but that you understand the techniques and tools that were used so you can then transfer them to your own projects.
Q. What software is used throughout this learning path? A. MODO, Maya, MARI, NUKEX, RenderMan, and Houdini.
Q. What if I don't use any of the software in this learning path? Can I follow along in my favorite software? A. Yes you can! While the tools and interfaces may vary, the techniques and concepts that you'll learn throughout this learning path can be transferred to nearly any of the major 3D and compositing applications. We would recommend that if you attempt to port the techniques to your preferred software that you are first familiar with that software. If you find it difficult to transfer these techniques to your preferred software, we have a variety of other learning paths for other software. Check out the Learning Paths page to see the learning paths for your favorite software.
